What counts as an 'attempt' in UPSC CSE?

An attempt is counted if you appear in Paper I of the Preliminary exam — even if you leave blank sheets. Merely registering and not appearing does NOT count as an attempt. However, submitting any paper (even blank) at the exam hall triggers the count.

Do SC/ST candidates really have unlimited attempts?

Yes — for UPSC CSE, SC and ST candidates have no official attempt cap, but they must still satisfy the upper age limit (which for SC/ST is 37 years, i.e. base 32 + 5 years relaxation). So the practical limit is the number of times they can appear between minimum age and maximum age.

Do SSC, RRB, and IBPS exams have attempt limits?

SSC CGL, SSC CHSL, RRB NTPC, and most IBPS exams currently have no official attempt cap — you can appear every time the notification is released as long as you meet the age criteria. UPSC CSE is the most prominent central exam with a strict attempt limit.

Enter the exam's attempt rules from its official notification — the engine does not bundle any exam-specific values. For exams with no cap, set the maximum attempts to 'Unlimited'. For exams that specify different caps per category, add rules for each category separately.

What happens if I have already used all my attempts?

Accepted Answer

The engine will return canAppear = false. There is no waiver for exhausted attempts under normal UPSC rules. If you believe there has been a clerical error in UPSC records (e.g. an exam you couldn't attend was counted), the process to correct that is through UPSC's official channels only.
