The expected gain formula

Every question you attempt has a probability of being right (your accuracy) and a probability of being wrong. The expected gain per attempt is the net value of attempting one question at your accuracy level.

The break-even threshold

The break-even accuracy tells you whether to attempt at all. Below it, each attempt loses more expected marks than it gains. Above it, attempting is positive-expectation and you should try to hit the recommended count.

Frequently Asked Questions

Break-even accuracy is the minimum success rate at which attempting a question has a positive expected return. Below it, each attempt is statistically expected to reduce your score. Formula: Break-Even Accuracy = Penalty Per Wrong / (Marks Per Question + Penalty Per Wrong). For a 2-mark question with ⅓ penalty (0.667 per wrong): break-even = 0.667 / (2 + 0.667) = 25%. Above 25% accuracy, attempting helps on average.
