How this works

A Muhurat is an auspicious time window determined by the simultaneous quality of five Panchang elements: Tithi (lunar day), Vara (weekday), Nakshatra (lunar mansion), Yoga (luni-solar combination), and Karana (half-Tithi).

This calculator identifies time slots in the day that avoid inauspicious periods — Rahu Kaal, Yamaganda, and Gulika Kaal — and ranks the remaining windows by how many auspicious Panchang factors are active simultaneously.

TithiLunar day (1–30)
VaraDay of the week
NakshatraMoon's mansion
YogaLuni-solar sum
KaranaHalf-Tithi
AbhijitMidday window

The slot score is a weighted sum of active auspicious factors, normalised to [0, 1]. Higher-scored slots are shown first. The Abhijit Muhurat window (roughly 11:54 AM – 12:18 PM) is a midday exception that overrides some otherwise-blocked periods.

Demo data only. Panchang values shown here are fixed placeholders — not computed for your date or location. Real Tithi, Nakshatra, and inauspicious period timings require an astronomical ephemeris. Integration with Prokerala API or Swiss Ephemeris is planned for Phase 2.

Vehicle purchase Muhurat — what Jyotisha tradition considers

Taking possession of a new vehicle is considered a significant new beginning in Jyotisha tradition. The Muhurat focuses primarily on Nakshatra and the avoidance of inauspicious daily periods.

Nakshatra

Pushya is the most widely recommended Nakshatra for vehicle purchase across classical texts. Rohini, Mrigashira, Hasta, Uttara Phalguni, Anuradha, and Revati are also commonly cited as auspicious for acquiring vehicles and other assets.

Tithi

Shukla paksha is preferred. The 2nd, 3rd, 5th, 7th, 10th, 11th, and 13th Tithis are generally considered auspicious. Chaturdashi, Ashtami, and Amavasya are typically avoided for auspicious purchases.

Inauspicious periods

Rahu Kaal, Yamaganda Kaal, Gulika Kaal, and Vishti (Bhadra) Karana are all avoided — consistent with the standard exclusions across Muhurat traditions.

What the calculator currently checks

The demo rule applied to Vehicle Purchase is the same illustrative rule used for all event types. Event-specific rules will be applied when Phase 2 Panchang integration is complete.

  • Avoids Rahu Kaal, Yamaganda Kaal, and Gulika Kaal
  • Treats Rohini Nakshatra as auspicious (broadly accepted convention)
  • Treats Vishti (Bhadra) Karana as inauspicious (broadly accepted convention)
  • Applies Abhijit Muhurat as a bonus positive factor
  • Requires a minimum window of 30 minutes
  • Does not yet differentiate Vehicle Purchase rules from other event types
