How this works

A Muhurat is an auspicious time window determined by the simultaneous quality of five Panchang elements: Tithi (lunar day), Vara (weekday), Nakshatra (lunar mansion), Yoga (luni-solar combination), and Karana (half-Tithi).

This calculator identifies time slots in the day that avoid inauspicious periods — Rahu Kaal, Yamaganda, and Gulika Kaal — and ranks the remaining windows by how many auspicious Panchang factors are active simultaneously.

The slot score is a weighted sum of active auspicious factors, normalised to [0, 1]. Higher-scored slots are shown first. The Abhijit Muhurat window (roughly 11:54 AM – 12:18 PM) is a midday exception that overrides some otherwise-blocked periods.

Marriage Muhurat — what Jyotisha tradition considers

Marriage (Vivah) is among the most extensively analysed occasions in Muhurat Jyotisha. Classical texts such as Muhurta Chintamani give detailed guidance on each of the five Panchang elements for Vivah, along with additional conditions the calculator does not yet model.

Tithi

Shukla paksha (bright fortnight) is strongly preferred. Many traditions list specific Tithis — typically the 2nd, 3rd, 5th, 7th, 10th, 11th, and 13th — as auspicious for Vivah, while Chaturthi (4th), Ashtami (8th), Navami (9th), and Chaturdashi (14th) are generally avoided.

Nakshatra

Nakshatra receives significant weight in Vivah Muhurat. Rohini is the most widely cited auspicious Nakshatra. Mrigashira, Uttara Phalguni, Hasta, Swati, Anuradha, Uttara Ashadha, Uttara Bhadrapada, and Revati also appear across multiple classical texts as suitable for marriage.

Karana

Vishti (Bhadra) Karana is universally avoided. This is one of the few Muhurat exclusions agreed upon across virtually all regional traditions.

Additional conditions (not yet modelled)

Classical Vivah Muhurat also requires that Jupiter and Venus are not combust, retrograde, or set (Asta). These planetary conditions require a real ephemeris and are not checked by the current calculator.

What the calculator currently checks

The demo rule applied to Marriage Muhurat is the same illustrative rule used for all event types. Event-specific rules will be applied when Phase 2 Panchang integration is complete.

  • Avoids Rahu Kaal, Yamaganda Kaal, and Gulika Kaal
  • Treats Rohini Nakshatra as auspicious (broadly accepted convention)
  • Treats Vishti (Bhadra) Karana as inauspicious (broadly accepted convention)
  • Applies Abhijit Muhurat as a bonus positive factor
  • Requires a minimum window of 30 minutes
  • Does not yet differentiate Marriage rules from other event types
